DESIGN CONCEPT

Moorilla Estate, one of Tasmania’s oldest wineries was acquired by David Walsh in 1995. Soon after acquiring the winery, Walsh – an avid art collector and architecture afficionado, turned the original Sir Roy Grounds home into a museum for his private collection of art & antiques.

Moorilla have once again commissioned the original architect, Nonda Katsalidis of Fender Katsalidis to design underground extensions to the museum which will re-open in 2009 as MONA (Museum of Old and New Art).

Moorilla's four existing pavilions, each named after an Australian Modernist painter, are situated high above the banks of the Derwent Estuary. Designed by Crawford Shurman Architects (now Architects Designhaus), the pavillions are large and light with cantilevered balconies overlooking the water, they offer a luxurious combination of inner city comfort and coastal tranquility. Brendan Jones of Antarctica has been commissioned to design additional accommodation and also a pool for the Estate.

A collaboration between Tasmanian architects Craig Rosevear and Jaws Architects saw the completion of the 2-storey Ether Building, which houses a further display of contemporary art, as well as the Source Restaurant (complete with an iconic Australian artwork by John Olsen set into the ceiling), a function centre, conference centre and cellar door.
