DESIGN CONCEPT

Paperbark Camp is a unique eco-resort situated amongst eucalypts and paperbark trees and bordering the Jervis Bay National Marine Park. The vision of owners Irena & Jeremy Hutchings was to develop an eco bush camp based on their safari experience in Africa.

If you have ever dreamed of having your own private ‘tree-house’, these safari style tents will not disappoint. Built on timber platforms above the ground, the twelve tents provide the ultimate in luxury camping, combining privacy and comfort.

Each tent is constructed with steel frame and double canvas roof, solar powered lighting and insect screens. Eight safari tents feature wrap around decks, private indoor/outdoor en-suites, whilst four deluxe tents tucked away from the main camp feature large private verandahs with lounges, and free-standing baths-with-a-view!

ENVIRONMENTAL

The following strategies were undertaken to minimize impact on the environment and educate visitors to the camp.

• All buildings are raised off the ground to minimize impact and protect from flooding
• Solar power utilised to provide lighting in tents
• No major tree clearing
• Extensive re-generation of bush undertaken
• All effluent is removed from the site in order to preserve the delicate wetland environment and the Jervis Bay National Marine Park
• Cars are parked in a central area away from accommodation and facilities
• No feeding of animals/birds is allowed. Visitors are educated as to why these practices are damaging to the wildlife and are not encouraged
• Water conservation practices are in place:
        Low flow showerheads are fitted
A change of towels is provided only upon request or after three days
Signage is in place asking guests to consider the environment and conserve water
• Interpretive information is provided for guests use including books & publications dedicated to the local surrounds and the flora & fauna that inhabits it
• Aboriginal bushtucker tours are organised for guests as well as campfire talks with local aborigines who teach and answers questions about the local aboriginal culture, in particular the importance of the natural environment to them as well as how the didgeridoo and music plays an important role in communicating this importance to the next generation
• Where possible local bush furniture made from Paperbark timber off the property has been used
• Much time is spent with guests and providing information on how they can enjoy the camp and the area without harming the environment     AWARDS   2004 Australian Timber Design Award for Environmental Commitment - Highly Commended
