DESIGN CONCEPT
Husband and wife team Mr. Pan Shiyi and Ms. Zhang Xin are the co-founders of private real estate developer SOHO China.
Commune by the Great Wall is one of their most renowned projects, exhibited at the 2002 la Biennale di Venezia, and winning Zhang a special prize for her “bold personal initiative”
The Commune is a private collection of contemporary architecture designed by 12 Asian architects, set in a shared landscape where modernism and tradition blend together.
Distorted Courtyard is a distorted version of the traditional courtyard house. In one sense distorted from the normal square shaped plan due to the site topography & view orientation, and in another by creating flexible living areas – inside becomes outside and vice versa, realising the need to adapt to various user groups and activity patterns.
Sliding screens can subdivide spaces to allow for group activities or private seclusion. Finishes are kept minimal with white rendered walls, timber floors and stone paving.
FEATURES
The property has four bedrooms over three levels, with two levels of open air courtyards and a small terrace.
The Distorted Courtyard is a nice venue for private meetings, small news briefings and high-level meetings. Barbeque parties and other outdoors activities can be hosted on the terrace or in the open-air courtyards.
