DESIGN CONCEPT

Husband and wife team Mr. Pan Shiyi and Ms. Zhang Xin are the co-founders of private real estate developer SOHO China.

Commune by the Great Wall is one of their most renowned projects, exhibited at the 2002 la Biennale di Venezia, and winning Zhang a special prize for her “bold personal initiative”

The Commune is a private collection of contemporary architecture designed by 12 Asian architects, set in a shared landscape where modernism and tradition blend together.

See and Seen house has been situated to face north, with uninterrupted mountain views. With smooth communication between the inside and the outside, the house harmoniously reconciles wide views with living privacy. Guests inside the house can watch the hills while watched by the hills outside. This house is all about seeing and being seen.

The architect used sustainable building methods for the exterior construction, with particular emphasis on heat preservation and energy saving using earth covering, insulated roofing and floor slabs and three-layer hollow glass windows.

Unable to use commercial concrete for the house due to the mountain location, the architect built from steel, brick and concrete, and re-used the soil cleared during construction for levelling the courtyard and covering the roof. Rocks uncovered during construction have also been re-used as sculpture or furniture around the house.
