DESIGN CONCEPT
Benesse Art Site Naoshima is a unique artistic environment situated on the island of Naoshima. The complex is structured around Benesse House, a hotel and museum exhibition space designed by Tadao Ando which was conceived as a coexistence of art, architecture and nature.
Artists who come to Naoshima create site-specific works, which are exhibited throughout the exhibition spaces, along the coastline and within the forest around the museum. Visitors to the complex are encouraged to reflect upon the Benesse Corporation’s core principle of “living well” through the direct connection with art and nature. As well as works by local and visiting artists, there are permanent collections throughout the complex, including works by Claude Monet, Andy Warhol, and Alberto Giacometti.
Tadao Ando was commissioned to design further accommodation facilities including the Oval, and 2 timber buildings ‘Park’ and ‘Beach’.
ENVIRONMENTAL
The two-storey timber buildings were designed with the environment in mind, using recyclable laminated timber.
