Shanghai-based URBN Hotels & Resorts is China’s first carbon neutral hotel development company, committed to operating genuinely environmentally friendly boutique hotels & resorts throughout China without harming the local and natural environment.
URBN Hotels & Resorts is a new boutique hotel and resort company created by innovative property developers Scott Barrack and Jules Kwan. Its first hotel, ‘URBN Hotels Shanghai’, officially opens in Spring 2008.They aim to develop and operate innovative, stylish hotels which combine locally sourced and recycled materials with modern architecture and design to create contemporary spaces inspired by China’s past, present and future.
The hotel is set in a vibrant hub of local activity, the hotel is close to shops, restaurants, colonial lane houses and Shanghai’s famous French Concession area. Conveniently located two blocks from Nanjing Road, Shanghai’s premium shopping, entertainment and business district.

By renovating an existing structure, focusing on using recycled and locally sourced materials such as reclaimed hardwoods and old Shanghai bricks, and introducing eco-friendly solutions like passive solar shades, and water based AC systems, URBN hopes to set an example for other businesses and industries in China and around the world.
